Under Construction!

Note: The Beginner's guide only covers Basic guidelines, as it is written for First time Roleplayers in mind. If you wish to be linked to the various Advanced guidelines there is a spoiler at the bottom of this topic with links to each Advanced guideline.

Welcome to PokeSaga! This beginner's guide is aimed at first time roleplayers at mind. With that in mind, if you have difficulty following any section of this topic please PM Red immediately for clarification and so that I can update the Beginner's guide accordingly.

So: What is roleplaying? Well, this is the dictionary definition:
the acting out or performance of a particular role, either consciously (as a technique in psychotherapy or training) or unconsciously, in accordance with the perceived expectations of society as regards a person's behaviour in a particular context.

This barely scratches the surface of what forum roleplaying is, however. In regulated roleplaying like you'll find on PokeSaga and other sites of this nature, users create characters which they manipulate through roleplaying threads. In this instance, your character is a pokemon trainer you create. As such the first step in this journey is to create your character. Fortunately we have a detailed step by step guide breaking down exactly how you can do this, and it can be found HERE!

The trainer you create will be the skin you slip into during your time on PokeSaga. The fun of roleplaying is to create a person and crawl around inside their head, to see the world through someone elses eyes and get to do things you've never dreamed of doing before. As such, you might prefer to create your character as wildly different from you as possible, stretching your imagination to it's limits as you try to get inside their head and figure out how they'd feel and think, or you might want to make the character as close to you as possible to get an experience of yourself in this strange world facing strange situations. Both approaches are perfectly valid and come down simply to your preference.

Once you're figured out what you want to do and have followed the guide to creating your trainer, your next step is to actually create a roleplay post. Click here to be taken to an example topic. Although this topic was created to demonstrate the basics of how to catch pokemon, it also serves as a good example of what a roleplay post is. Before you can dive into writing your own posts, however, there are a few things you need to know. First, some common roleplaying terminology:

IC/In Character: Something that is In character is done/said by your roleplay character. Roleplay posts are done IC.

OOC/Out Of Character: Something that is OOC is not in character. This is typically seen in certain parts of a roleplay post that aren't part of the post. For example, if two friends are roleplaying together, one might start his post with a note that isn't part of the actual dialogue but simply a message to his friend, like this: "OOC: That was a great post, didn't think you'd manage to dodge that." the text following the OOC: is out of character.

You'll encounter these a lot, so it's a good idea to get a grasp on them now. Secondly, before you write a roleplaying post you need to have a solid idea of what a roleplaying post is. With a roleplay post you want to set a scene and tell a narrative through the eyes of a character. Whether it's first person [I said, I thought, I feel] or third person [Alexander said, he thought, he felt] it should all be done through the perspective of your character you wrote earlier. You need to decide going on what your post is going to be about so you have a clear direction for it to go in. It could be something as simple as Having lunch with your best friend to something as complex as a fight for your life. Regardless of the subject matter you need a clear picture in your mind. Once you have that, you can begin writing your post. When writing your post, the goal is simple: write a post which tells the narrative you had in your head clearly enough that anyone that reads it can follow and understand it. Ideally you want it to also leave the reader with a clear picture of the emotions of those involved, as well as a solid image of the environment around them. This can be achieved through several means. First, are you using proper Adjectives? Is your description painting a clear image? Secondly, does the piece you've written leave any questions unanswered? For example, if in your story, your character out of nowhere punches someone in the face and then the story moves on without any clarification, you've left questions unresolved. Did they know each other? What happened between them to cause such a reaction? etc. Finally, does your piece flow coherently. Is it all the same writing style? [all third person or all first person as opposed to an awkward mix for example] does it have a natural conclusion or does it just end out of nowhere?

Writing your first posts can be daunting, but remember: We all started out as amateurs at one point. Ask questions. Try new things. Making mistakes is okay, we've all done it, and it's better to write a shoddy paragraph and have experienced people guide you on how to improve it than to not post it at all due to feeling self conscious.
