01: Creating Your Trainer and Pokemon! Empty
PostSubject: 01: Creating Your Trainer and Pokemon!   01: Creating Your Trainer and Pokemon! Dot10Wed Oct 30, 2013 3:35 pm

Note: There are two posts in this topic, the first is about Creating your Trainer, while the second post is about Creating Pokemon

Before you can start to roleplay you must fill out a Template for your Trainer. A template is a uniform form that houses information about the character you are going to be roleplaying as. This serves as a reference point for other players and members of staff, as well as a place for you to begin to flesh out the story of your character by writing information about their personality, appearance and past.

All character templates must meet a minimal standard of quality, and because of this they must be approved by a member of staff before you can roleplay as that character. The requirements are low, and are there to ensure that there is sufficient information available so that anyone that roleplays with you can paint a picture in their mind of how your character looks and feels.

To get started on making your character, simply open a text editor like Notepad, Microsoft Word or OpenOffice and copy and paste the text inside this code box into it:

Code:
[center]
Imagehere
[/center]

[u][b]I. Personal Information[/b][/u]

[b]Name:[/b] (Your character's full name)
[b]Gender:[/b] (Your character's Gender)

[b]Home Town:[/b] (Your character's home town)

[b]Nickname:[/b] (Your Pokemon's Nickname, if any)

[b]Personality:[/b] (Your pokemon's personality. At least 50 words.)
[b]History:[/b] (The history of how you caught your pokemon. A link to the capturing thread is fine. If this is your starting pokemon, it should be covered in your character history, so feel free to leave this blank or link to your character profile)

[u][b]II.Technical Information[/b][/u]

[b]Level:[/b] (your Pokemon's level)
[b]Experience:[/b] 0 (Leave as zero)
[b]Ability:[/b] (Your Pokemon's ability.)

[b]Special Attack:[/b]
[b]Special Defense:[/b]
[b]Speed:[/b]
Don't worry if this looks intimidating at the moment, it's very easy to fill out, and we'll walk you through each step. The information Inside the brackets is there to help elaborate on what you should put beside each section of the template. Simply remove the text inside the brackets as you reach a section and fill it out according to the information contained within the brackets. Be side to write anything you're going to write to the right side of the [/b] tag. If you need more help, the rest of this post will go through, breaking down each part of the template, explaining new elements as you encounter them and helping you fill it in.

Code:
[center]
Imagehere
[/center]
This piece that starts off the template is a section for an image of your trainer if you want to use one. If you have found a picture of a character that you like and want to use it for your trainer's appearance, simply save the picture and upload it to an image hosting website. [we recommend Imgur.com ] Once you've uploaded the image to an image hosting website, you'll be given a "direct link" copy this link and replace the "Imagehere" text with this link.

The text that says center inside the brackets is what's known as BB code. You'll encounter this a lot on this forum. A BB code is a set of tags that modify the text within them in a certain way. There are open tags, like
and close tags, like [/img] When a matching set of open and close BB tags, like the
tags meet, anything within them will be modified according to what the tag does. For example, the bold tag, which is a B inside brackets, when put around text, make's it bold, like this:

no B tag
B tag

If you Preview what you've worked on so far, it won't work properly, it will simply look like this:

https://i.imgur.com/vELCpl2.png

That is because the link to the image does not have image tags on it. There is a special BBtag that will make links to images appear as the image itself, the img tag.

Simply place an open image tag at the front of the link, and a close image tag at the end of the link, like this:

Code:
[img]http://i.imgur.com/vELCpl2.png[/img]
and then it will look like this:

01: Creating Your Trainer and Pokemon! VELCpl2

If you don't want to use a picture for your trainer and instead simply want to describe them, remove the imagehere text and the center tags.

Code:
[u][b]I. Personal Information[/b][/u]

[b]Name:[/b] (Your character's full name)
[b]Gender:[/b] (Your character's Gender)
[b]Age:[/b] (Your Character's age. They must be at least ten.)
[b]Birthday:[/b] (Your character's birthday. Day and Month only, no year needed)
[b]Sexuality:[/b] (Your character's sexuality. Feel free to leave this blank)
[b]Region:[/b] (Your character's starting region. Choose between Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova and Kalos)
[b]Home Town:[/b] (Your character's home town)
[b]Trainer Class:[/b] (Your Trainer's class. Choose from Trainer, Ranger, Breeder or Dragon Tamer. This choice is purely cosmetic and affects your name colour and the icon above your avatar)
This is the next section of the template you'll find yourself working on, and is the easiest to fill out. Simply remove the text that is in brackets along with the brackets themselves, and write where they were to the write of the bold tag. For example, if the text in brackets says to put your character's name there, remove the brackets and fill out your character's name. Here is an example of this section being filled out:

I. Personal Information

Name: Ash Ketchum
Gender: Male
Age: 10
Birthday: May 22nd
Sexuality: Asexual
Region: Kanto
Home Town: Pallet Town
Trainer Class: Pokemon Trainer

Your region will be where you start roleplaying, so if you want to start roleplaying in say, the Johto region, then set your Region to Johto. This doesn't stop you from leaving the region once you get a pokemon that can fly, however. Your home town doesn't have to be in the Region you're starting in. For example, you can be born in Pallet Town in Kanto but be starting in Kalos. Not every section will be open to roleplay in to start with, as the forum is still under construction, so please check to see if the Region you want is open or not. If it isn't, it'll have Under construction on it's image on the main page of the forum. Trainer class is purely cosmetic, it affects the colour of your username and the icon that appears above your username.

Code:
[u][b]II. Physical Information[/b][/u]

[b]Height:[/b] (Your character's Height)
[b]Weight:[/b] (Your character's Weight)
[b]Hair:[/b] (Your character's hair colour)
[b]Eyes:[/b] (Your character's eye colour)
[b]General Appearance:[/b] (Not required if you have an image at the top of your profile, otherwise at least 50 words describing your character's appearance.)
This is the next section of the template you'll need to fill out. It's all about how your character looks. If you're using a picture for your character's appearance, small details like eye colour don't have to match up to the image, but please don't describe a wildly different physical appearance from the picture you're using. You can use any measurement system you want for Height/Weight, for example, Inches, feet, CM, MM. Simply use what you're familiar with. When you're done it should look like this:

[Note: the example is going to use multiple height and weight examples with different measurement systems, you only have to use one]

II. Physical Information

Height: Five feet, Six inches | 170 cm | 1700 mm
Weight: 73 kg | 160 lbs
Hair: Black
Eyes: Brown
General Appearance: Ash is a tall, well groomed kid with a heart of gold. His short, matte black hair is hidden by a red baseball cap with white trim. His skin is tanned from his travels, with dark brown eyes resting above a constant smile. Ash always wears a dark blue jacket with white trim over a black undershirt with dark blue jeans. His boots are dark red with black trim, matching his gloves of the same colour.

Code:
[u][b]III. Background Information[/b][/u]

[b]Personality:[/b] (At least 100 words about your character's Personality, their likes and dislikes. Try and flesh them out as an individual and paint a picture of what they're like)

[b]History:[/b] (At least 200 words about your character's past, and how they reached the point in their life they're currently at)
The Background Information is the longest section of your profile, and while the word count requirements look daunting to new roleplayers, you'll find they are quite easy to fill out once you get started. The Personality section is there to allow you to flesh out what your character is like. A good rule of thumb is to try and make it so that anyone who reads the profile will have a decent picture of what your character would be like to spend time with.

History is your character's backstory. Typically you'll want the history to cover from birth til when they're setting off for their pokemon adventure. Some good things to cover in this are their upbringing, why they decided to go on their adventure, childhood friends, where they grew up and other information of this nature. Did they go to school? If so, where? What did they study there? Did they have a best friend? ask yourself questions about your character's past and you'll find it's easy to fill this section in. It should look like this when you're done:

III. Background Information

Personality: Ash is a well natured and loving kid with a passion for pokemon. Ever generous, Ash always goes out of his way to help those around him, often getting himself deeply involved with other people's personal lives because of this. This goes double for pokemon, as Ash can't ignore injustice or suffering wherever he encounters it. Although he is kind and energetic, Ash can also be rather stubborn and rash. He makes decisions impulsively, and once he sets his mind on something he finds it very difficult to admit fault or change his mind. Because of this he tends to get himself in trouble rather easily, as his desire to help those around him combined with his naiveté and impulsiveness means He'll often put himself in positions he wasn't truly prepared to be in.

History: Ash was born and raised in the tiny hamlet of Pallet town in the Kanto region. He was raised by a single mother, as his father died before he was born. Because of this, Ash lacked a male influence in his life, and tried to fill this void by becoming close to some of the older and wiser males around his small town, including Professor Oak. This desire to make new connections to fill his need for attention his mother was unable to fill by herself meant that from a young age, Ash knew everyone in his neighbourhood reasonably well. This meant he had a sizeable field of friends to play with from a young age, and when not being home schooled by his mother, Ash would spend every minute he had free playing with these friends. They would pretend to be Pokemon trainers, as most children in Pallet Town dreamed of starting their own pokemon adventure as soon as they were of age, a dream encouraged by the eccentric Pokemon Professor who abided in the town.

Ash spent time on Professor Oak's estate whenever he could, helping care take for the enormous collection of pokemon the professor cared for alongside the other neighbourhood kids. Like most children in Pallet Town, Ash rapidly outgrew the small hamlet, and quickly set his eyes on leaving. As such, he, like most local children, planned to leave Pallet Town on his Tenth Birthday. This was facilitated by Professor Oak, who would gift every child wishing to leave with a young pokemon to train and travel with. Typically, this pokemon would be either a Charmander, Squirtle or Bulbasaur, which he would breed personally from his personal stocks. On Ash's tenth birthday, however, the professor had no more pokemon left, having given his last pokemon, a squirtle, to his grandson, Gary Oak, ironically the same pokemon as Ash himself wanted. At first, the professor tried to turn Ash away, but after his insisting and begging, gave him the only pokemon he had to spare; a rebellious and anti-social Pikachu that hated his own Pokeball. Out of options, Ash accepted the offer and set off with his reluctant companion on a quest to see the world!

[u][b]V. Other Information[/b][/u]

[b]Face Claim:[/b] (If you have a picture for your character, please state here what it's from. If it's custom art, please credit the artist if possible. If it's from a show or game, please state it and what the character's name is)

[b]Roleplay Sample:[/b] (At least 100 words of you demonstrating how you roleplay)
This is the next section of the template you'll find yourself having to fill out. Section IV, the Inventory, is not to be edited. Simply remove the text inside the brackets but don't change any of the listed items. for Face Claim, fill it out if you have a picture, stating where it is from if you know it. If you don't, simply state Unknown. Please do not use a faceclaim from any pokemon game, movie or show, as it will be automatically rejected. A roleplay sample is an example of how you roleplay, and is there to demonstrate to staff your technical abilities. Don't worry if you've never roleplayed before, simply read the Beginner's Guide, which is designed to help people who have never roleplayed before find their feet.

Once done, it should look like this:

IV. Inventory

  • Five Pokéballs
  • A Pokedex
  • World Map
  • Bicycle

V. Other Information

Face Claim: Ash Ketchum from Pokemon!

Roleplay Sample: "Pikachu, I choose you!" Ash cried, causing the fluffy, bright yellow pokemon at his feet to leap forward confidently. His stature was dwarfed by the Onix that sat coiled before him, which let out a deafening roar that sounded distinctly like a laugh in response. "Onix, use Wrap! Brock called out to his Onix, which lunged towards the tiny Pikachu head first, uncoiling it's enormous body as it did so. Pikachu leapt to the side, narrowly avoiding the Onix's head as it smashed into the floor of the gym, leaving a sizeable crater in it's wake. The Tail of the Onix kept coming, however, and smashed into Pikachu. As soon as Onix felt Pikachu contact with it's tail, it began to coil itself, wrapping the entirety of it's body around the helpless Pikachu before beginning to constrict itself tighter and tighter around it. "PIKA!!" Pikachu let out a shriek of pain in response to the boulders of the Onix's body pressing into it tighter and tighter, until finally the pain overwhelmed it, causing it to pass out. The Emergency Withdrawl System kicked in as Pikachu passed out, summoning him back to his Pokeball. Ash hung his head in defeat, staring as his feet in shame. "Come back when you're strong enough to face me!" Brock jeered, the doors of his gym swinging open as he spoke, beckoning ash to leave his presence.

This leaves only one section left; the starter pokemon section. This will be covered in the next post, which will break down how to make pokemon. When all the pieces of your template are put together, it should look like this:

PostSubject: Re: 01: Creating Your Trainer and Pokemon!   01: Creating Your Trainer and Pokemon! Dot10Wed Oct 30, 2013 3:36 pm

Like your trainer, your Pokemon must have a template. Your starter pokemon is to be apped inside your Trainer template, while all pokemon you catch on your journey are to be apped individiually inside the Pokemon Library.

In this code box is the Pokemon template as it looks during the Trainer application. For the template for individual pokemon applications, click here

Code:
[u][b]VI. Starting Pokemon[/b][/u]

[u][b]I. Pokemon Information[/b][/u]

[b]Species:[/b] (which pokemon is it? eg Pikachu, Charizard, etc)
[b]Nickname:[/b] (Your Pokemon's Nickname, if any)
[b]Gender:[/b] (your Pokemon's Gender)
[b]Personality:[/b] (Your pokemon's personality. At least 50 words.)
[b]History:[/b] (The history of how you caught your pokemon. A link to the capturing thread is fine. If this is your starting pokemon, it should be covered in your character history, so feel free to leave this blank or link to your character profile)

[u][b]II.Technical Information[/b][/u]

[b]Level:[/b] (your Pokemon's level)
[b]Experience:[/b] 0 (Leave as zero)
[b]Ability:[/b] (Your Pokemon's ability.)
[b]Held Item:[/b] (Starts as nothing)
[b]Moves:[/b] (Your pokemon's moves)

[u][b]III. Stats[/b][/u]

[b]HP:[/b]
[b]Attack:[/b]
[b]Defense:[/b]
[b]Special Attack:[/b]
[b]Special Defense:[/b]
[b]Speed:[/b]
For your starting pokemon, you can pick any non-legendary base evolution pokemon. A list of all pokemon considered legendary on this site can be found inside Guideline 07: Tales of The Unown: A guide to Legendary Pokemon! Base evolution means it is the youngest form the pokemon can be found at. For example, you cannot start with a Pikachu, like this example uses, because Pikachu's least evolved form is Pichu.

Code:
[u][b]VI. Starting Pokemon[/b][/u]

[u][b]I. Pokemon Information[/b][/u]

[b]Species:[/b] (which pokemon is it? eg Pikachu, Charizard, etc)
[b]Nickname:[/b] (Your Pokemon's Nickname, if any)
[b]Gender:[/b] (your Pokemon's Gender)
[b]Personality:[/b] (Your pokemon's personality. At least 50 words.)
[b]History:[/b] (The history of how you caught your pokemon. A link to the capturing thread is fine. If this is your starting pokemon, it should be covered in your character history, so feel free to leave this blank or link to your character profile)
Species is the type of pokemon it is. As stated above, your starting pokemon can be any non-legendary base evolution. Nickname is simply the name you refer to your pokemon by, if you don't want to give it a nickname leave this blank. Pokemon gender can be whatever you want, unless it is a gender locked pokemon. A gender locked pokemon is a pokemon that can only be a certain gender. For example, Tyrogue can only be a boy, while Happiny can only be a girl. Your pokemon's personality works just like your trainer's personality, as it is a description of what your pokemon is like. Your pokemon's history should cover how you got the pokemon. Note, you don't have to just get your pokemon from someone else, you could find it as an egg and hatch it, or some other way of obtaining it that doesn't follow the video game's model of getting it as a gift from a professsor.

when filled out, it should look like so:

[note: As the example used is based off Ash, like in the previous post, it starts with a Pikachu. If this weren't an example it would have to be a Pichu, as Pikachu is not a base evolution]

VI. Starting Pokemon

I. Pokemon Information

Species: Pikachu
Nickname:
Gender: Male
Personality: Before coming to Ash, Pikachu was a hostile and antisocial Pokemon that would attack any human that came near. After maturing and bonding with Ash, however, he has imprinted on his trainer, becoming extremely loyal to and defensive of Ash. Having met many humans, pikachu has since become rather friendly with humans, though he is careful not to trust strangers. He has a soft spot for baby pokemon, and acted as a fierce guardian of Misty's newborn Togepi.
History: After becoming seperated from his pack, Pikachu was stumbled upon by Professor Oak near Pallet Town. Scared, he attacked the professor, who captured Pikachu in self defense. He was then given to Ash Ketchum, a young trainer from Pallet Town as his First Pokemon, a decision Pikachu was highly weary of at first, as he didn't trust any human.

Code:
[u][b]II.Technical Information[/b][/u]

[b]Level:[/b] (your Pokemon's level)
[b]Experience:[/b] 0 (Leave as zero)
[b]Ability:[/b] (Your Pokemon's ability.)
[b]Held Item:[/b] (Starts as nothing)
[b]Moves:[/b] (Your pokemon's moves)

[u][b]III. Stats[/b][/u]

[b]HP:[/b]
[b]Attack:[/b]
[b]Defense:[/b]
[b]Special Attack:[/b]
[b]Special Defense:[/b]
[b]Speed:[/b]
All starting pokemon begin at Level 10, and their experience starts at 0. A pokemon's Ability is exactly like it is in the video game; a species specific trait. If you go to Bulbapedia and type your pokemon of choice in the search field, in the box on the right will be a section called Abilities. If there are multiple abilities for your pokemon, choose the ability you like [YOu cannot choose a hidden ability] and write it's name in the Ability section. For moves, on the Pokemon's bulbapedia page, there is a section inside the contents box numbered 7.8: Learnset. go to Learnset 7.8.1: By leveling up. Simply list all your Pokemon's moves that have the level "start" as well as any pokemon moves that the pokemon can learn up at that level. For example, Pikachu learns Tail Whip at level 5 and Thunder wave at level 10, so he would start with these. Your starting pokemon may also start with an egg move or a TM move of your choice. This information can be found on the same page under "By TM/HM" and "By Breeding" respectively. Held item is an item equipped to the pokemon, which starts as nothing.

For stats, you start with Twenty points to divide among the six sections. We won't go into depth on how this works here,
but it will be covered in detail under Guideline 02: How Statistics and Levels Work! for now, know that if a stat is left without any points, it doesn't mean the pokemon won't have any stats in that area. These are simply what your pokemon specializes in, so feel free to put all your points in one stat if you want! It should look like this when it's done:

II.Technical Information

Level: 10
Experience: 0 (Leave as zero)
Ability: Static
Held Item: Nothing
Moves:
ThunderShock
Growl
Tail Whip
Thunder Wave
Thunderbolt [TM]

III. Stats

HP: 0
Attack: 3
Defense: 3
Special Attack: 4
Special Defense: 6
Speed: 4

Put together and placed in the appropriate section on the character template, it will look like this:

His skin is tanned from his travels, with dark brown eyes resting above a constant smile. Ash always wears a dark blue jacket with white trim over a black undershirt with dark blue jeans. His boots are dark red with black trim, matching his gloves of the same colour.

History: After becoming separated from his pack, Pikachu was stumbled upon by Professor Oak near Pallet Town. Scared, he attacked the professor, who captured Pikachu in self defense. He was then given to Ash Ketchum, a young trainer from Pallet Town as his First Pokemon, a decision Pikachu was highly weary of at first, as he didn't trust any human.
